Day 3 and 4 of The Unlimited Kitesurfing Expedition saw Zack Buchan and Ross Walters kitesurfing down the East Coast of KZN from Cape Vidal to Mtunzini.

Due to light winds, over the past two days Walters and Buchan made slow progress down the Coast. It did however give them the opportunity to experience the spectacular beauty of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, particularly its rich marine diversity. At one stage, the two came within 20 metres of a large Humpback Whale and her calf and they also had the privilege of kiting with a school of flying fish. Added to this was an encounter with a huge leatherback sea turtle.

“This leg was very special for us, as we really got in touch with Mother Nature,” said Buchan.

“You really get to witness some amazing sights off our beautiful Coast that many people would give anything to see.”

Adding to their adventure, the pair also made a lunch-stop at the historic Jolly Rubino ship-wreck site.

The day progressed slowly and due to the gusty winds after lunch, they only managed a short distance before being forced to beach about 22 kilometres North of Richards Bay yesterday.

The two continued today (Sunday) on day 4, and after a 65 kilometre stint, beached at Mtunzini.

Buchan is currently suffering from sore knees, which means it will cost him great effort to continue forward – and to make the remaining 120 kilometre trek to Durban, which if all goes well could take 2 more kiting days.

The weather forecast however does not look good for the early part of the week and the pair might find themselves waiting for wind on the beach at Mtunzini.
